Copernicus Import Improves Speed, Accuracy in Organ Donation Process

Nottingham, MD | November 4, 2022. LifeLogics, a specialty data management solutions provider to the organ and tissue recovery and processing community, today announced that Gift of Life Donor Program in Philadelphia, PA has implemented and gone live with the NEW Copernicus Import solution at its Gift of Life Donor Care Center at Penn Medicine. Copernicus Import allows clients to import key patient/donor data securely and automatically from the Epic(R) EMR directly into Gift of Life’s TrueNorth electronic donor records management system.

“Copernicus helps everyone in the organ donation value chain – primarily hospitals and organ procurement organizations (OPOs) – streamline the donation process by transferring vital donor information faster, with accuracy, further reducing manual entry,” says Peter Bilsky, Executive Director at LifeLogics. “We purpose-built the solution to deliver meaningful efficiency gains to our customers, and it’s a genuine game-changer. A faster, smoother organ donation process leads to more lives saved, and that’s the goal we are all working towards.”

Gift of Life President and CEO Richard Hasz is encouraged by the solution’s ability to help modernize the information technology infrastructure for organ donation. The technology eliminates the need for Gift of Life transplant coordinators to enter vital clinical data that is abstracted from the hospital medical record.

“This innovation allows us to use most advanced technology to update our data collection method, improving the donation process as recommended in a landmark report by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM),” Hasz said. “With the push of a button, our donor record is populated with accurate clinical data, freeing our staff of manual input, improving efficiency and allowing for increased focus on donor management and allocation.”

Copernicus: Constantly Evolving

First launched in 2020, LifeLogics has been proactive in augmenting and expanding Copernicus’ features and functionality in recent years as transformation has become a top priority in health care. A digital gateway between a hospital and OPO, Copernicus is the backbone of real-time referrals, and access to critical patient information, providing the framework for the OPOs to gather donor assessment and suitability data. The most recent version of the application, now running at Gift of Life Donor Program, delivers in three core areas:

● Integration: Connectivity with Epic(R) allows seamless, on demand, automated patient data imports
● Reconciliation: The application obviates the need for reconciliation between the hospital and OPO
● Innovation: The complex nature of healthcare makes genuine innovation especially challenging, but Copernicus delivers

While the benefits are many, the biggest contributions of Copernicus are oriented around speed, accuracy, and overall efficiency. Indeed, authors in a recent Harvard Business Review article on the subject reported that hundreds of hours of professional time (nurses, administrators) were saved during a year following the implementation of an automated referral system.
